In recent years, New Taipei City has been planning a series of courses and activities specifically for early childhood sports, developing games and audio-visual teaching materials for young children, and organizing achievements presentations and sharing seminars, which have been well received by teachers and parents, and have also raised the public's awareness of early childhood sports.
Following the launch of the preschool-specific Early Childhood Health Exercise in 2019, which provides kindergarten teachers and students with a 30-minute warm-up before daily large-muscle activities, parents are also encouraged to work with their children on health. 2020's updated Early Childhood Health Exercise - "New Taipei Healthy Follow Me" is actively promoted as a 5-minute warm-up exercise before large-muscle activities, and has been well received, which is an indication that early childhood exercise has gained a lot of attention and importance in the city of New Taipei. This shows the attention and importance of early childhood exercise in New Taipei City.
"Movement is the source of all life." -Leonardo da Vinci" believes that all children's learning begins with movement, just as kindergarten teachers like to arrange large muscle activities at the beginning of the whole day's curriculum activities, so that children can move naturally and quietly. Early childhood exercise not only promotes the development of large and small muscles, but also cultivates children's muscular endurance, sense of balance, flexibility, explosive force, sensory integration, motor coordination, etc., and allows children to learn about themselves through exercise.
We often see smiles and satisfaction on children's faces during the Big Muscle activities. Children are elated that they have completed their assigned projects, have a spirit of perseverance because of failure, practice in frustration, grow in practice, and sportsmanship is realized through experience, and they have a greater sense of self-confidence and accomplishment in themselves; moreover, they gain the awareness of how to protect themselves, pay attention to safety, and minimize injuries from the activities.
In the course, group interaction is also designed to enhance cooperation with peers and to develop interpersonal relationships; cheering each other on helps to build a sense of unity in the class, which is conducive to the development of other activities. By leading the children in sweaty exercises for more than 30 minutes every day, we can see a significant increase in their participation and concentration on the activities. Teachers usually use rich and diversified materials to design large-muscle activities, first understand the use of the materials, and also design different exercise programs for various materials, with the difficulty level adjusted according to the children's ability, as well as letting the children carry out repetitive exercises, which on the one hand can enhance their familiarity with the movements, and on the other hand stimulate their agility towards the activities, as well as promote the activation of the brain's motor area to further develop the ability of movement planning. On the other hand, it stimulates the children's agility in the activity and promotes the activation of the brain's motor area to further develop the ability of movement planning, which will develop the ability of Wei Lai to learn more complex movements more efficiently.
We have also observed that children's sports can also help children to build up an understanding of discipline and rules. Children who were originally not good at queuing up and waiting for their turn can do very well after practicing in the program! Teachers are touched and amazed to see the children's development from not knowing to being able to do it, and from being able to do it to being able to do it well. We also insist that the children do continuous running exercises every day, in the playground on sunny days, and move to the indoor space on rainy days. This is to improve the children's cardiorespiratory fitness and strengthen their body resistance, as well as to increase their metabolism through adequate hydration after exercise. The number of colds and flu in the class has been significantly reduced with the continuous exercise.
Although the trend of early childhood sports has gained the attention of early childhood education scholars, experts and field teachers, and parents have a better concept of sports, we still have to urge: sports should start at home! We found that parents of new students often give positive comments to the school because, after their children come to school, they not only become very fond of sports, but also become very self-confident and feel a sense of achievement. Parents who were willing to exercise with their children for more than 30 minutes a day said that this brought a healthier and happier atmosphere to the family, and promoted the development of positive emotions in their children. Parents also reported that their children fell asleep better and slept longer and more regularly after school.
