A few days ago at a dinner party, a friend said that the biggest problem in Taiwan is the M-shaped society. This society is like a tree. The more saplings we have, the more energy we will get from the sun, and the more leaves we have, the more fallen leaves we will have, and after the fallen leaves have decayed, naturally there will be ants, fungi and earthworms to convert the decayed leaves into fertilizers, and so the stronger we will become.
My friend said that the richer a person is, the more resources he can get, and the more money rolls in, the faster his wealth accumulates. He thinks that in terms of education, the better the family environment, the more people can afford to go to tutorials, the more they can get into good public schools, and the easier it is for students from good schools to find good jobs, and good jobs will provide a good life and a good environment, and the more their children can go to tutorials; and as the cycle goes on, the gap between the rich and the poor widens, and the M-shape society is formed. He is pessimistic that once they fall into this vicious cycle, the poor will never be able to turn around in their eight lives.
I don't think so. Although it is a law of nature that "the more there is, the easier it is to have", it is not entirely true because the seeds must fall outside the range of influence of the mother plant so that they will not compete with her for sunlight, water and nutrients. In order for the next generation to grow better, the bigger the tree, the farther away its seeds must fall. From the time of germination, the new seed has to struggle independently, without the protection of its ancestors, so that the resulting tree is stronger and not afraid of the wind, sun and rain.
In human society, there are many examples of people being rich for more than three generations. In The Dream of the Red Chamber, Cao Xueqin said, "A big tree is bound to be empty, and its prosperity is bound to decline. Relying on one's ancestors can only last for a short time, but not for the rest of one's life. A tree can only develop better if it is detached from its mother plant, and a person has to leave his hometown to fight for a better life before his wealth can be sustained.
From this point of view, nature is still very fair. Scientists have even discovered that forest fires are necessary for the rotation of generations, because some seeds are not suitable for germination, and must wait until the forest fires have roasted them, and the hard outer shells are peeled off, so that the seeds can germinate. When it grows up and dies, another tree will take its place, and its next generation will have to wait until the next forest fire, which is also called "party rotation" in the plant world. Therefore, everyone should work hard to enrich themselves and wait for the opportunity, as long as they don't die, there will always be a day when they can get ahead.
In fact, education should teach everyone to have the confidence of "being born to be useful". Those who are capable of taking care of themselves should then help others and let others use what they cannot use. Sociologists have long said that a society works when each member of the community does what he or she can and gets what he or she needs. If everyone is educated and capable, there is a chance for them to turn over a new leaf.
When a tree dies, it will be turned into fertilizer, so that the following trees can grow taller; the same is true for human beings, as the efforts of the previous generation will give the next generation more room for development.
Foreigners say, "From dust you must return to dust." The Chinese also say, "The falling red is not an unfeeling thing, it turns into spring mud and protects the flowers even more. The leaves and the dead trees are the future land of the forest. With this cycle of life and death, nature can live on and on; life is the beginning of death, and death is the opportunity for life.
Understanding that human beings are just passing through a hundred generations, we know that it is better not to keep anything for ourselves, because we cannot take it with us anyway, so we should make the best use of it for the benefit of others, and the efforts of others will be to make our own next generation better. When everyone can think like this, the M-shaped society will disappear naturally.
