I originally thought that I only needed to sing and dance with the children at school every day. I thought I could just sing and dance with the children every day, eat, sleep, play, or draw pictures, and have a great time, but in reality it's not like that at all! Not only is there little money, a lot of work, and long working hours, but I have been in the ECE field for more than ten years, and I deeply understand that ECE teachers really need to be able to do everything, and if they can't enjoy themselves and give to the children without any regrets, they simply can't stay in the ECE field in the long run.
Based on my observation and experience, I have summarized the following qualities of an ECE teacher: first of all, you have to be as versatile as a magician, and as cheeky as a clown, and dare to be funny and ugly; you have to be like a mother to calm down the child's restlessness and give a sense of security at the right time, so that the child will feel that you are the second mother in the school; and then you are often so busy that you don't have time to eat, and when you are free you have to be as hungry as a hungry man who devours like a wolf! The first thing you need to do is to hurry up! And have to be as hard-working as an ox, like the thousand-handed Goddess of Mercy to have several hands, to deal with these children at the same time; but also have to be like the Buddha to have a compassionate heart, even if the children's deviant behavior to make the emotions about to explode, but still be able to stay calm and communicate properly. The most tiring thing is to get up earlier than the rooster, others work from 9 to 5, we work from early morning to late at night; if your body is about to run out of battery, you have to find a way to recharge your battery, and then turn into Bread Superman to continue to deal with the children, parents, and the annoying administrative work....
Often, after lunch, children go to the restroom in groups to poop in the toilet, and when a group of children call out to you while you are eating, they yell, "Teacher, we're ready to poop! You have to put down the dishes and go to the restroom to wipe the butt of one child after another! Then you go back to your meal! Or if a child suddenly gets sick and throws up, you have to put down the dishes and clean up the vomit. I had to put down the dishes to clean up the vomit....... My coworkers asked me how you can still eat....... days! Now that I think about it, it's true! I'm not sure how I'm going to be able to eat. The teacher of the kindergarten is really not an ordinary person!
Kindergarten teaching duties and functions include daily routine teaching (phonics, math, art, physical education, rhythm, unit curriculum, etc.), daily routine and self-care training (diapering, toileting, eating, dressing, organizing school bags, brushing teeth, washing face, napping, etc.), writing teaching files, activity planning, classroom setting, cleaning, cleaning, and cleaning the classroom. Recently, there is a special phenomenon that is worth mentioning, that is, most of the parents are not willing to play the role of the bad guy, as long as the child's behavior at home is not good enough, they have to ask the teacher to be the bad guy! ...I can only say that Taiwan's kindergarten teachers are really good at what they do! As you know, kindergartens in Europe and the US are very expensive and only accept children over 3 years old! Parents have to train their children at home to use the toilet and eat by themselves before they can enter kindergarten! On the other hand, in Taiwan, because of the large number of dual-income families, most of them have to rely on kindergarten teachers.
Looking back on the past ten years in the workplace, it can be said that I have tasted all the sweet and sour, and I have experienced a lot of frustration in my career in early childhood education, not only falling down, but also getting up several times! The good thing is that when teachers start to lose heart, get tired and frustrated again, if they suddenly receive the affirmation, encouragement and support from parents, or if they see the innocent smiles of the children and their creative and nonsensical interactions from time to time, the deflated balloon will immediately pick up again. Early childhood education is indeed a road of no return! But since I have already embarked on it, I can only move forward! I would like to share my encouragement with all the teachers who are quietly working hard! Good luck!
