Lao Tzu's Tao Te Ching (《道德經》) says, "Heaven and earth are not kind, and they take everything as regurgitations; the sages are not kind, and they take the people as regurgitations", and it is easy to misinterpret this statement. In fact, it only emphasizes that "heaven and earth" nurtures all things in accordance with nature, and does not expect them to reciprocate; and the "sages" (rulers) should not expect the people to be grateful for their unquestioning love and care. The so-called "unkindness" means "not to be regarded as benevolence"; therefore, the stormy winds and rains, the bitter drought and floods, or the winds and sunshine, or the abundant snowfalls, etc., are not deliberate manifestations of the heaven and the earth, but are only natural phenomena, just like the total eclipse of the sun. While a total eclipse of the sun is a natural phenomenon that we can appreciate, Typhoon Morakot has brought us great disasters, killing and injuring people, changing the color of the mountains and rivers, and causing immeasurable damage to people's properties; and at the same time, floods and earthquakes have caused serious disasters in other places such as Japan and India. Human beings must recognize the indestructible power of nature again, and while lamenting that "heaven and earth are not kind", they should rethink what "human beings" themselves should do. The whole country is concerned about the disaster: mourning for the compatriots who died, praying for those who are missing and waiting to be rescued, applauding those who are dedicated to disaster relief and donating enthusiastically. At this time, I hope that the horrors of this internationally shocking and horrifying scene will awaken everyone's sense of empathy, so that we can all work together to prevent it from ever happening again.
